Financial Inclusion for 4Ps recipients in Zamboanga

Financial Inclusion for 4Ps recipients in Zamboanga

For many Filipinos living below the poverty level in Zamboanga, life is a daily grind to make ends-meet amidst the prevailing socio-political uncertainties. When the government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) implemented the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) or the poverty alleviation program, the P1,400 (around 33 US dollars) monthly allowance per family provided much needed relief for them. Unfortunately, since most of the beneficiaries live in remote areas where basic services are scarce, trying to obtain the funds that the government allotted for them is a huge undertaking. For Vilma Jun, a 28 year old Badjao housewife, from the town of Labason, the government allowance was a...

ENCASH celebrates 300 ATMs in 3 years

In 3 years of operation, Electronic Network Cash Tellers, Inc. (ENCASH), the first independent ATM deployer in the Philippines, grew its ATM network from 4 to 300 in 2011. Beginning with just one ATM in Puerto Galera, ENCASH ATMs can now be found in rural areas all over the country. The company’s growth is attributed to the strategic partnership it formed with 149 rural banks, cooperatives and independent entities where ENCASH ATMs may be found. ENCASH’s ATMs played a key role in bringing to rural communities fast, easy, and secure means of obtaining their money. Before the deployment of the ENCASH ATM in rural areas, townsfolk would have to travel via...

“Mabuti na lang meron kayong ATM. Kawawa kami na mag biyahe pa sa San Carlos o Dagupan para makapag withdraw ng aming pera…” (It’s a good thing that there is an ATM. We suffered greatly when we had to travel to San Carlos just to withdraw our money.”)

“Having the ATM in Rural Bank of Majayjay is so convenient for our townspeople because they no longer have to travel far to access their accounts. They can even go to the ATM in their pyjamas!”

“When my daughter brought up the subject of installing an ATM in the Rural Bank of Pilar, I told her to take responsibility for it since I was hesitant about having one. When it was finally deployed, I thought that our clients would just be the weekend users. I did not realize that we would have a market for it in our town. I was mistaken, and people in the neighboring town also come here to transact.”

“Napakahalaga at malaking tulong sa amin ang pagkakaroon ng ATM dito sa Malasiqui. Kahit gabi at may emergency kami pwede kaming pumunta dito.”

( “Having the ATM here in Malasiqui is of great value and great help to us. Even if we have emergencies at night, we can easily access the ATM.”)

My husband works in NIA and he’s receiving his salary in his ATM. With your ATM service we can withdraw cash even beyond office hours and during Saturdays and Sundays. And also this service lessens the burden of traveling afar and the expenses incurred”

“Somebody said, ‘Unity Bank made history in Zambales’, when the ATM was installed in our branch. Being one of the first Rural Banks with ATM is extremely remarkable. We can see how grateful these ATM users are since there is no need for them to travel for hours just to get their monthly pensions, salaries and allowance in the city. Having an ATM helped us to attract more clients in our branch.”

“Before the ENCASH ATM was deployed in PATECI, our townspeople were forced to pay P500 for a one-way trip via banca to go to the next island to withdraw money. Now, they are able to save their money and are secure because they do not have to travel such a long way. Indeed, having an ATM to serve our people used to be a dream, but the reality is even better.”

- Lea Ero

Manager, PATECI

One of our clients told me that every month he rents a van so that he and his wife could get their pension in Olongapo. It would cost him P2,000.00 for the rental of van and another P500.00 for the snacks. Since they are old and weak, traveling became so painful for them. He also found the long lines at the ATM in Olongapo to be stressful, too. That’s why when he and his wife learned that there is an ENCASH ATM in Unity Bank already, they were very thankful. Their expenses were cut down  to P50.00 ( only 2% of their usual expenses).”

Unity Bank, San Narciso Branch

An ATM user, who was not a branch client, came up to me to thank me personally for the ATM. He needed money urgently because a member of his family was going to be admitted to the hospital for an emergency procedure. Without the ATM, he would have to travel very far in order to procure money.”
